Transform the Teaching of Reading

Transform the Teaching of Reading

Do you think teachers need to be better prepared to help children with dyslexia how to read? Help transform the way reading is taught in the US by supporting IDA’s new project.

Teachers Who Are Better Prepared Lessen the Impact of Reading Difficulties

Help Transform Reading Education in America!

IDA has embarked on a project that can transform
the teaching of reading in America.

There are far too few teachers qualified to teach children with dyslexia and the techniques that help dyslexic children learn are exactly the methods that work best for all beginning readers. Yet, in the vast majority of classrooms in America, reading is being taught using methods that hundreds of trial studies have shown are exactly the wrong way to teach our children to read.

A year-end donation can support IDA’s extraordinary project to transform the teaching of reading in classrooms across America. In 2011, IDA accredited nine university programs using volunteer professionals to complete this work and is now evaluating additional university programs to continue this work.  This year, we are continuing this work at twelve additional universities. IDA professionals are evaluating curricula, teaching materials, and classroom content training teacher(s) who will teach reading, whether in the elementary classroom or in remedial settings.

These accreditations will help bring these university programs in line with IDA’s Knowledge and Practice Standards, an outline of scientifically proven methods for teaching all children, not just those with dyslexia. These programs will produce and populate our classrooms, year after year, with teachers who can begin to erase the deficits in reading skills that plague American education.

It costs IDA $5,000 to accredit one university teaching program. We would like, through the year end donations of our supporters, to accredit at least three additional schools next year. Your generous contribution can help make qualified teachers available for struggling dyslexic readers. And it can help advance the progress of all beginning readers by bringing to our classrooms methods that work.

Thank you for your support of IDA.
